How is Athena Screening better than existing tech and coding test tools?
Beyond how easy it is to use and that it’s free, the best reason to use Athena Screen is that it’s simply more accurate when it comes to measuring programming ability. Rather than focusing exclusively on a small number of algorithm problems (like other popular engineering screening services), We Screen 100+ Stats from Resume, Github, Stackoverflow, and DSA profiles like Leetcode to provide signals on a wide range of engineering skills, including programming logic, CS fundamentals, Development skills in specific language and frameworks, and more.
Athena Screen is trained on interview outcomes of 100,000+ candidates, and 10,000+ interviews over the last year. The results are already stunningly accurate. 90% of candidates who score a 5/5 on our Screening go on to pass interviews with senior engineers, while less than 1% of candidates who score a 1/5 or 2/5 go on to pass interviews.
Why should I use a Developer Screening or Interview AI Assistant?
You’ll save time, increase your hiring velocity, and diversify your applicant pool. Athena Screen is a developer assessment tool used as a tech screen step in your hiring process. Many companies use a coding skills assessment to pre-screen inbound applicants so that the Engineering team isn’t wasting time on phone calls & interviews with unqualified candidates. The lack of upfront time cost means you can afford to widen your funnel and find talent that manual resume screening alone might miss. Our technical screening tool uses our data-backed tech assessments to measure actual technical skills. Leveraging the Athena Screen tool lets you see skills data side-by-side with an applicant’s resume, reduces wasted interviews, and helps find hidden gems from underrepresented backgrounds.
What Technical skills can I test candidates for?
We offer a wide range of engineering skills tests, including:
- Algorithms & Data Structures
- Assess understanding of behavior and use cases of common algorithms and the data structures from stats polled from platforms like Leetcode, Codeforces, Codechef, and GeeksForGeeks.
- General Coding Logic | Web-Back-end/Front-end/Mobile
- Assess conceptual understanding of general back-end/front-end/iOS or Android development and practical understanding of Languages/Frameworks - Java, JavaScript, Python, Rust, Go, C++, C#, SQL, React, Springboot, etc based on Stats from past & current Experience, Recommendations from peers, mentors, & managers, projects on Github, activity on StackOverflow, Kaggle, and blogging platforms like Medium, & Hashnode.
- Distributed Computing
- Assess knowledge of cloud computing, microservices, and distributed systems based on Stats from past & current Experience, Recommendations from Peers, Mentors, & Managers, projects on Github, Activity on StackOverflow, Kaggle, and blogging platforms like Medium, and Hashnode.
- Candidates do not write code on our assessments.

Why use data instead of free-form, coding questions or multiple choice questions?
Beyond how easy it is to use and that it’s free, the best reason to use Data is that it’s simply more accurate & improves with more data when it comes to measuring programming ability.
However, we know there’s also a signal to be gained from free-form customizable questions, which is why we have the option to customize and add that to your Assessment.
How do I interpret test scores?
We score candidates on a 5-point scale. We provide overall scores, as well as a breakdown of scores into Problem Solving (Algorithms & Data Structures) and General Coding Logic & Development Skills. When deciding whether to interview candidates, we generally recommend the following:
- For 1/5 scores, the applicant demonstrates little knowledge of this subject area as per the required Years of Experience.
- For 2/5 scores, the applicant demonstrates basic knowledge of this subject area as per the required Years of Experience. This is a common score for early career engineers with good potential who will benefit from senior guidance.
- For a 3/5 score, the applicant demonstrates core professional proficiency in this subject area indicative of an IC engineer who can independently own code in that area as per the required Years of Experience.
- For 4/5 and 5/5 scores, the applicant demonstrates an advanced understanding of this subject area as per the required Years of Experience.
How well do the tests predict phone screen and interview performance?
We've refined our technical screening until they're highly predictive: applicants scoring a 5/5 on a test pass detailed technical programming interviews 90% of the time, while less than 1% of candidates who score a 1/5 or 2/5 go on to pass interviews.
How large is the test data?
Our models are currently running with thousands of calibrated software developer interview feedback. The feedback data points get larger every week.
Are the tests getting better over time?
Absolutely. The tests are calibrated using responses from the 100K+ engineers on our platform. Scores are reviewed & thresholds are set by subject matter experts in each specific field. The tests get more accurate as we scale.
